Veteran racer Lee Pierce will be entering a second year with the Kenyon Midget Series racing against his son at times. Austin Pierce, 22, previously raced go karts, but hasn't been in a competitive situation for several years.

“I've always been competitive with Lee,” Austin said. “This will be a good experience. We compete at basketball and I really like spending time with him.”

He served four years with the U.S. Army, leaving the service last June as an equipment operator and currently works for Extreme Concrete Coatings in Indianapolis.

“I raced go karts a long time ago when my dad was racing stock cars,” Pierce said. “This is a whole different ball game.”

He said he drove the Kenyon Midget at a small dirt track at a neighbor's property.

“The biggest challenge will be getting comfortable in the Midget,” Austin said. “I want to see how the car handles and figure out what it's capable of.”

Pierce said the plan is to race all the events at the three Michigan tracks and the Kenyon Classic at Anderson Speedway and at least one Indianapolis Speedrome event.

The team is hoping to rent Anderson Speedway with other competitors prior to the first race in April.

He said the team is going to rent the second Kenyon Midget out to other competitors to help cover the expenses.

Austin said it was great being part of his father's Kenyon Midget Series team last year.
