Tight point battles head to tricky Mt. Lawn oval

By Ken de la Bastide

With three races remaining the battle for both the Kenyon Midget championship and rookie of the year honors are intensifying. The series returns to action this Saturday at Mt. Lawn Speedway with its long sweeping front and back straight and the always tricky “home plate” corner.

Except for the first race of the season Cincinnati driver Jack Macenko has been the overall point leader. After building up a margin of 168-points over second place running Dameron Taylor, Macenko watched that lead get trimmed to 41 points following the most recent race at Anderson Speedway. Macenko was caught up in a heat race crash with eventual feature race winner Thomas Schrage and was unable to answer the call for the feature. Taylor finished second and added ten additional points for leading a lap and the most laps at Anderson.

With the series returning to the tricky Mt. Lawn Speedway oval, both Macenko and Taylor have performed well here in the past. Macenko topped qualifying, won a heat race and feature the last time the series was at Mt. Lawn and also earned the Advanced Racing Suspension Hard Charger award. Taylor finished second followed by Ayrton Houk and Schrage.

The rookie of the year battle saw a change at the top of the standings with Kyle Ford overcoming a 2-point deficit to leave Anderson with a 47-point advantage over Dave Osborn. Ford finished one spot better than Osborn the last time the series visited Mt. Lawn Speedway.
