Gas City providing teams with new challenges

By Ken de la Bastide

For the second consecutive race competitors with the Kenyon Midget Series will be making an appearance at a new facility. The series makes the first ever visit to the quarter-mile dirt oval at Gas City Speedway. The previous race at Montpelier Motor Speedway marked the series first visit to that dirt oval.

A strong field of 15 teams are entered for the 30-lap feature including nine rookie drivers with the series.

Colin Grissom, the 2020 Kenyon Midget Series champion, has turned laps at Gas City in a sprint car. “It's a fast track,” Grissom said. “The Kenyon Midgets should put on a great show. It will be a lot of fun. “I don't think they will be able to hold the cars wide open,” he said. “You have to lift. The low groove is always good at Gas City and the high groove gets good when it's work in.” Grissom said the track crew at Gas City always provides a good racing surface, adding there is a middle groove for the competitors.

Current point leader Trey Osborne has raced the Gas City oval in a different form of Midget racing. “I'm looking forward to it,” Osborne said. “I like racing on the dirt and this is a double dip on the dirt tracks.” Osborne scored the victory at Montpelier. “Gas City will make for a great race,” he said.

Jack Macenko said he can't wait to compete on the Gas City oval. “This will be the first time at the track for the series and myself,” he said. “With practice and the heat races we should get a lot of laps to learn the track. “I'm optimistic,” Macenko said. “I did well the last race out. Right now I'm driving with a lot of confidence.” Macenko finished fourth at Montpelier and scored a heat race victory.
